Colloquium - Dr. Maurice Magaña

Friday, November 1 at 12:00 pm
Interdisciplinary Building B, room 161B

Title: "Urban Culture, Visual Art, and Diasporic Indigeneity in Mexican Los Angeles"

Based on ethnographic fieldwork and cultural analysis, this talk examines the construction of identity, place, and politics as articulated through murals produced by Zapotec artists in Los Angeles, CA. This talk will show how both the content and location of the murals speak to the intersecting histories of Indigenous migration, Black and Brown social movements, and hip-hop culture in Mexican Los Angeles.

Colloquium - Dr. Casey Walsh

Friday, November 15 at 12:00 pm
Interdisciplinary Building B, room 161B.

Talk title TBD

Dr. Walsh is an associate professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Dr. Walsh's research focuses on the anthropological political economy of the Mexico-US borderlands. He studies the ways in which water, land and labor have been organized to produce commodities in areas marked by aridity, especially northern Mexico and the southwestern United States. This work took the form of a socioeconomic and cultural history (Building the Borderlands) of irrigated cotton agriculture in the borderlands, and in particular, northeastern Mexico.
